The city of West University Place was developed by former Tennessee Gov. Ben Hooper in 1917. Proximity to the Rice University inspired the name. About 13,000 residents live in this city that spaning more than 1200 acres of residential property and has nearly 20 acres of commercial property. The area is noted for its strong inspection and permit policies and strict zoning regulations.

I would like to add that originally, West University Place encompassed small cottages. Many were torn down and replaced with large two story houses. The West University trend of demolishing and replacing older homes is regrettable in my opinion.

For educational needs, the city's sole public school, West University Elementary School, is a part of Houston Independent School District. Students who live in West University Place are zoned to West University Elementary, Pershing Middle School in the Braeswood Place neighborhood of Houston, and Lamar High School, in the Upper Kirby district.
