Default How is Cypress Area?

Cypress is one of my options to live when I move to Houston. One reason is that it is the home to Houston's second largest school district.

What do you guys think of this neighborhood?

It is not a bad idea as Cypress is only 30 minutes northwest of downtown and has seen tremendous growth since 1980s. The school district you are referring to is Cy-Fair ISD.

How about Katy?

Katy is also about 30 minutes (northwest) of downtown. Several developments are located in this area such as Cinco Ranch, Kelliwood and Green Trails.

A friend of mine who loves shopping swears by Katy - she lives in Barker Reservoir home, which is home to Katy Mills Mall

Her name by the way is Cathy.

There is also a new and large development called Bridgeland that you may want to consider. It is located between Cypress and Katy.

Other cities to the northwest of Cypress include Jersey Village and Tomball; Jersey Village is a bedroom community at the intersection of Beltway 8 and the Northwest Freeway.

Back to talking about Katy

Over 50 percent of the Katy Area population is under the age of 35, making it one of the youngest cities in the country. The Katy area has many diverse housing options ranging from apartments and condominiums to large estate homes.

The major trouble that I see with Cypress and Katy areas is that the commute in traffic is horrible. It can easily take over an hour to get from downtown out to those locations during rush hour. If there is an accident or stall I have seen traffic backed up to the point that it takes more than 2 hours to travel from downtown out to Cypress or Katy.

Cypress especially has issues with commute times as it is getting to the point where you will always find traffic on 290 and it moves at a crawl. However, if you do not mind long commutes both areas are great for families and they have some of the best public schools in the Houston metro.

Yes commuting is a major issue and I guess the good features of Katy must be balanced against this problem and a trade-off must be made - can't have everything I suppose!

Peak hour traffic in Houston is really a pain! To cope and plan alternative routes, use Houston Transtar's Real-Time Traffic Map.
