Angry How can I get back my house rental deposit?

I am thinking of moving out from the house that I am currently renting. I explained this to the landlord and he said he will only pay me back half of the money I paid him.

Should I call the cops?

Go to rental tribunal if there is one.

To a lawyer then to if you have to. You can also go to the agent you used to rent the apartment from. Also the real estate agents do have an organization where they refuse to take a person who defaults on personal legal obligation, often paying for such things them selves and taking the landlord to court to get money from them.

Also name and shame campaign if you have to. Fight for your right!

I also think that it would be better to contact Real Estate Agent he used to rent the apartment.

Has he given a reason for not wanting to return the whole deposit? I hope it all turns out to be a big misunderstanding.

How long was your lease? May be he wants you to stay until your lease ends and that's why he is threating to keep half of your rent.

Its a common problem with most landlords, they try to swindle you out of your money stating absolutely vague reasons. I don't think cops can help you here, the best thing to do would be to approach the agent you took the property through, they may be able to intervene and sort it out for you if you have it all on paper.

Chester, what is on the contract? Without details on this I cannot answer this one, but most times an early termination on a lease may end in you losing your deposit.

I was just think what BillT said and will add that a landlord has to say why he is not giving you back the deposit, he can't just do it because he feels like it.

I'm seeing a lot of these Threads... you hav to look at your contract and see what the terms are. If you are breaking the lease by moving out early maybe he can do that.
